February 13 is the Day of the condom
All over the world, Condom Day is celebrated on February 13, a holiday designed to remind the world's population of the importance of contraception and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. By this date, we have collected facts, some of which are extremely surprising. Did you know about this?..
We made you out of what was
The legend of King Minos says that scorpions and snakes appeared in his sperm due to a curse. To protect his partner, he made a female condom out of a goat's bladder. It didn't get any better: the intestines and bladders of various animals, fish skin, linen covers soaked in a special compound, and even... horns were used! But the Japanese used two types of condoms: one made of fine tanned leather, and the other made of the inner film of a turtle shell. The oldest and most historically confirmed condom was found in the south of Sweden in the city of Lund: it dates back to 1640. The first rubber condom appeared in 1855.
What should I call you?..
In Germany, a condom is called a "Parisian", in France it is an "English hood", and in Lebanon it is a "coat" at all. It's nice, of course, but we remember more about the name "Product No. 2" that came from Soviet times. There are several versions of why exactly No. 2. In the USSR, the production of condoms was established in 1936, by the way, at the suggestion of Stalin himself. The same factory produced gas masks ("product No. 1"), erasers ("product No. 30") and galoshes ("product No. 4"). One version is that the second number of the condom was assigned by the type of rubber. The second one states that 2 is the size. The first number was not in demand among Soviet men, as was the third, but the second one was just right.
All ages are nimble in love
Back in 2014, Switzerland began producing small—sized condoms for teenagers. This was done after a study revealed that teenagers aged 12-14 are currently having sex much more often than their peers did in the 1990s. At the same time, regular condoms are too big for 25% of them. Now "teen" condoms can be bought in other countries.
Well, the most active age of condom use is between 18 and 25 years old.
No contraindications!
The excuse "I'm allergic to latex!" in response to a request to use a condom has not worked for a long time. Everyone knows that alternative products are produced for allergy sufferers using polyurethane and polyisoprene. But not everyone knows that there are condoms even for vegans! While the standard ones use milk protein casein to smooth latex, the vegan ones replace it with cocoa powder. It sounds delicious, right?
Guaranteed by electronics
Surely many people have wondered how condoms are checked for integrity. The answer is simple — electricity! After production, each condom is put on a metal rod, which is supplied with a strong voltage (more than 1000 Volts). If the product is airtight, it will be a good insulator, if there are holes, there will be a voltage drop, and the condom will be rejected.
Where it's thin, it doesn't tear
The thinnest condom in the world today was released by the Chinese company Guangzhou Daming United Rubber Products — the thickness of the product is only 0.036 millimeters. The development of the Chinese, called Aoni, entered the Guinness Book of Records. It surpassed the previous record holder, the Japanese Okamoto condom, by 0.002 millimeters.
